Luxury Villa in Roches Noires & Hotel à Pointe aux Biches

Location: Mauritius

Dates: Autumn 2025

Overview: A territorial reading commissioned by Atelier Paule de Romeuf, a private house and the refurbishment of a four-star hotel.
“The reading was to retrieve these beauties, layers excavated from a land site.”

Mauritius is a palimpsest of Dutch, French, English colonisation.

Indentured minorities brought in after the abolition of slavery. Beneath everything, the birth of a humanity in mosaic still held quietly today in villages, homes, rituals, objects, gestures.

Vernacular architecture as colonial windows drawn for damp heat and moving air, hand-thrown pottery, still available but limited to religious festivals of the Indian community, plant knowledge, building details.

A foundation of references, materials, and crafts, from which contemporary architecture could be drawn without erasing what the island had silently kept alive.

“A reading from the bottom up. Not a vision applied.”
