A very simple and ordinary house at the centre of Murozumi village. Few — if any — features to preserve.

The reading begins exactly here: no heritage to defer to, only the village around it and the materials the village itself still holds.

The house was stripped from top to bottom. Plastic, inox, all un-earthy materials removed. Recycled wood planks from Oshima island and other sustainable materials put in. Non-toxic paints over the original wood veneer. An old artisan in Hiroshima was found to redo our tsuchikabe — traditional mud walls — in parts of the house. All appliances came from the Bokkuriya Toishi second-hand shop in Shunan, antiques from Ohkubo in Kudamatsu
